This definitely strives to rival the Hollywood epics of its time, and in many ways succeeds, but ultimately comes across as a bloated and ahistorical propaganda piece. (Not that the Hollywood historical epics weren't ALSO bloated and ahistorical propaganda pieces.) I did enjoy some of the big set-pieces featuring literal armies of extras. And I liked that this film posed an obvious question about the crusades: why would kings of Europe have any claim on land in the Middle East regardless of religious affiliation? (Also, the crusades were just a stupid point in human history. Religion kills.
After Saladin’s victory over the King of Jerusalem, a peace treaty is signed between them, but the commander of the Crusader army, Renaud de Chatillon, slaughters a group of pilgrims going to Mecca. Saladin then decides to take revenge.
