The rumour mill has been churning for a while and fans of The Conjuring received the good news that a sequel to 2017’s The Nun would officially be moving forward, and today, franchise creator James Wan took to Instagram to confirm that production had officially begun on the sequel. Few details are known about the new film, though Wan did confirm that Bonnie Aarons was returning to reprise her role as the demonic creature and that the film would be directed by Michael Chaves, who also helmed The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The Nun 2 does not yet have a release date.

The film “NUN 2 – is in production. With [Michael Chaves] directing. Welcome, Michael and Bonnie Aarons to the Conjuring universe. Here are some photos of Bonnie haunting me on the set of The Conjuring 2,” Wan captioned.

During the script for the first film in 2017, “When a young nun in a cloistered abbey in Romania ends her life, a priest with a haunted past and a novice on the verge of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they discover the order’s unmentionable secret.

Clearly risking not only their lives but also their faith and souls, they confront an evil force in the form of the same demonic nun who terrorized audiences in The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.”

Since the release of the first film, 5 years have passed and few details have emerged about a sequel or the narrative threads it would continue to explore. One of the last teases we got about the narrative came from franchise producer Peter Safran in 2019.

“I think there’s an inevitability to another Nun movie,” Safran shared with Entertainment Weekly. “We have a really fun plot for that teed up, so I think that’s the next one that will be written.”

He continued, “After Annabelle 2, we said, ‘We told several families in danger in a possessed environment [movies]. We really wanted to get away from that in terms of look, feel, geography, landscape, everything. Once we knew that people were really interested in The Nun, we thought, “This is the perfect opportunity to get out of the American setting, to get out of what people know and put it in a unique environment.” [We] went there and shot in Transylvania in these incredible castles with hooded doors.”

It’s a safe bet that The Nun 2 will similarly blend the lines between the horror and action-adventure genres. Stay tuned for the release date of the film.
