In the year 2016, the director, Scott Derrickson is responsible for directing “Doctor Strange”. The opportunity to introduce the Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Find out how the actor Benedict Cumberbatch prepared for the role of the famous wizard.
During this year 2016, Marvel Studios decided to hire Scott Derrickson to direct the first opus of the Doctor Strange saga. The filmmaker, who came from the world of horror (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) thus offers a licked and impressive blockbuster that quickly seduced the press as well as the spectators. With Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, the film was nominated for an Oscar and earned over $677 million at the box office.
The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen as the big bad. The film tells the story of Stephen Strange, a brilliant neurosurgeon who has a serious car accident and loses the use of his hands. He then goes on a spiritual retreat to a Tibetan temple where he learns to wield the mystical arts to become the famous Doctor Strange.
Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor who takes care to really get into his roles. He often prepares himself in a drastic and impressively diligent way to get into his characters. For example, for The Power of the Dog, the actor became a smoker for the purposes of the film. He started smoking unfiltered cigarettes like the cowboys of the time until he got tobacco poisoning. And Doctor Strange, although it is a Marvel blockbuster, is no exception to the rule.
Like many of the actors joining the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch has had an intense physical preparation.
“You eat very well, you have brilliant people doing your training, you do exercise, yoga, you have a personal doctor in case of injuries, someone who looks after your diet and you do your stunts and all the running around during filming. We give you all of that and it’s not that hard. You just have to apply yourself. But we’re lucky, I’m sure there are people who would kill to have this type of experience.”
Benedict Cumberbatch began this athletic training in 2015, for an hour a day every morning. The goal was to prioritize a long-term workout and diet that would keep his body in shape and thus avoid overly intense body changes that can prove dangerous to his health.
Benedict Cumberbatch was able to rely on one of his past personal experiences to prepare himself for the role of Stephen Strange. Indeed, a few years ago, during a sabbatical year, the actor spent a year volunteering in a Buddhist monastery. He decided to teach English there. He later explained that this enriching experience was obviously very beneficial in his approach to the character of Strange.
