It’s been a long wait for comedian Ryan Reynolds to finally get a big-screen adaptation of “Deadpool”. Did you know that the character of Negasonic Teenage Warhead is totally different between the comics and the feature film?
The first attempt at Deadpool on the big screen dates back to 2009 when Gavin Hood directed the forgettable X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Already, at that time, it is the actor Ryan Reynolds who plays the famous mercenary. But Wade Wilson is butchered and light-years away from his representation in the comics. Obviously, it does not pass with the fans. Ryan Reynolds will then fight for the next 13 years with 20th Century Fox so that Deadpool can have his own movie, and he can restore his reputation with the audience.
As a result, in 2016, Fox Studios agreed with him and produced an R-rated movie based on Deadpool. The direction is entrusted to Tim Miller, who leaves plenty of room for Ryan Reynolds to have fun and improvise. The film was also a huge success at the box office with more than 782 million dollars of worldwide receipts for a budget of 58 million. So Ryan Reynolds was totally right to believe in it.
During his first solo cinematographic adventure, Deadpool crosses paths with two X-Men: the famous Colossus and the young Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The first one is a character already known by the general public who appeared three times in the movies: in X-Men 2, X-Men: The Final Confrontation and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The only difference compared to his previous appearances is that it is the actor Andre Tricoteux who succeeds Daniel Cudmore.
Who is the character of Negasonic Teenage Warhead? Played by the young Brianna Hildebrand, her character in the film by Tim Miller is very different from that of the comics. Indeed, in the comics, Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a telepathic and precognitive mutant. She sees the future through dreams and nightmares. Her abilities have been modified for the purposes of the film. Simply to make her powers more in line with her name. Thus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead went from telepathy to explosiveness.
The character of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, aka Ellie Phimister, first appeared in 2001 in New X-Men #115. Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, she is first a student of Emma Frost, with whom she perfects her telepathic powers. Negasonic Teenage Warhead quickly plays an important role with the X-Men thanks to her ability to see the future. She is indeed inhabited by visions that give her some information about the near future.
The actress Emma Frost, Negasonic Teenage Warhead makes rare appearances in the comics. And her movie adaptation in the Deadpool saga is therefore very different from the original material. The character later returned in Deadpool 2. Now, the future of the young superheroine remains uncertain. It is difficult to know if Negasonic Teenage Warhead will come back in Deadpool 3 or not. As a reminder, this third opus which has no release date yet should be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be directed by Shawn Levy.
