The real story between Jurassic World and Omar Sy

With the release of “Jurassic Park III”, the dinosaurs are back with “Jurassic World”. The director Colin Trevorrow took advantage of this new opus to add the Frenchman Omar Sy to the film. The director explains this choice.

Steven Spielberg directed the very first Jurassic Park. With more than 900 million dollars in revenue at the box office, this first opus of the Jurassic saga is a real hit (the biggest of Spielberg’s career). Inevitably, Universal saw an excellent opportunity to exploit.

In 1997, a sequel was released. Steven Spielberg returned to direct The Lost World, which was again a success ($618 million in revenue). Then, in 2001, director Joe Johnston succeeded the great Steven Spielberg to direct Jurassic Park III.

This third opus was not as successful as expected: negative reviews and “only” 368 million dollars in receipts at the box office. Universal therefore decided to stop the saga here.

After years of waiting, in 2015, Jurassic Park is reborn from its ashes. Colin Trevorrow is hired by the studio to direct Jurassic World. Notably carried by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the feature film is a box office triumph with more than $1.6 billion in box office receipts.

It is an immediate success and Jurassic Park III is directly placed in the top 10 of the biggest box office successes of all time. In 2018, it is Juan Antonio Bayona who directs Jurassic World: the Fallen Kingdom, a darker sequel that generates more than 1.3 billion dollars in revenue. Colin Trevorrow is meanwhile back behind the camera to direct Jurassic World: The Next World, expected on June 8, 2022. This film will conclude the two sagas.

But the biggest surprise of Jurassic World is the presence of our national Omar Sy alongside actors like Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent d’Onofrio or B.D. Wong.

Omar Sy, the Frenchman, plays Barry, a lucid and trained raptor trainer. Even if this role is still very secondary, it allows Omar Sy to become even more established in the American cinema landscape. Between Jurassic World, X-Men: Days of Future Past and A Vif! the years 2014 and 2015 have been very productive for Omar Sy in Hollywood.

At the time of the launch of Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow stopped by the presence of Omar Sy in the film at the microphone of Première. He said he has a deep respect for the French actor. Colin Trevorrow estimates Omar Sy at the highest point and considers him an actor full of talent. The two men have subsequently become friends:

Colin Trevorrow admits that he wrote the role, especially for Omar, I’m a huge fan, I spent a lot of time in France, my wife is French … He has a much more important role than one imagines. He didn’t just show up to play a scene. For example, there is this great scene with Vincent d’Onofrio where Omar speaks French to the raptors, Vincent pretends to understand but in fact he does not understand anything…

The director even added to AlloCiné that he did not want to make the same mistake as X-Men: Days of Future Past which had “spoiled his incredible personality”.

Since Colin Trevorrow is back at the helm of Jurassic World: The Next World, Omar Sy is also back in his role of raptor trainer. The actor should even have a more important role in this third film.

The two artists have become so close that, for a while, Omar Sy could have appeared in Star Wars IX. Indeed, initially, it was Colin Trevorrow who was to direct The Skywalker Ascension, before being replaced by J.J. Abrams.
