Beau Is Afraid”, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a fearful man who endures a lot over the course of three hours, earned $320,396 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. These ticket sales translate into a whopping $80,099 per theater, the highest average of the year. It is also the second-highest per-screen average for A24, behind Adam Sandler’s crime film “Uncut Gems.”
The film, “Beau Is Afraid” has an obligation to keep the momentum going by expanding nationwide next weekend. It’s been a struggle for many independent films in the post-pandemic era, though A24 has managed to propel films like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Whale” to box office success. But “Tár,” “Triangle of Sadness” and other acclaimed art house films failed to turn their huge screen averages – which are the key metric for platform releases – into robust theatrical releases. These films were dropped after struggling to reach mainstream audiences.
