Warner Bros. Studios has decided to wait to see the results of the film, The Fantastic World: Dumbledore’s Secrets before committing to a fourth film.

According to Variety, while the Fantastic Beasts series had been announced as a five-film saga, sources have confirmed that there is currently no script for Fantastic Beasts 4. Additionally, Warner Bros. Pictures are “waiting to see how Dumbledore’s Secrets will be received before giving the green light to films four and five [sic].”

Although the Harry Potter series is a huge success, the third Fantastic Beasts film is struggling to reach the top of the box office. Dumbledore’s Secrets is expected to bring in between $100 million and $140 million domestically, which would make it the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film to date. The film already has the lowest international opening of the franchise, with $58 million in 22 foreign markets on the weekend of April 8.

It is worth noting the multiple controversies that the Fantastic Beasts franchise has faced, such as the fact that Johnny Depp (who played the antagonist Gellert Grindelwald in the first two films) was forced to leave the franchise after losing his libel suit against the British tabloid The Sun. Meanwhile, Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling continues to be criticized for her controversial views on gender identity, while Fantastic Beasts actor Ezra Miller is also facing legal problems. Finally, there’s Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, which led to the departure of WarnerMedia president Ann Sarnoff, who oversaw the Harry Potter franchise.

The Fantastic Beasts films kicked off in November 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a film set decades before the events of the Harry Potter series. The film was a box office success, earning $814 worldwide, and was met with mostly positive reviews, currently holding a 74% approval rating and Certified Fresh distinction on Rotten Tomatoes. The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was originally announced as the beginning of a trilogy, but a month before the film’s release, it was announced that the new series would actually consist of five films.

Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald, was released in theaters in 2018. and it has collected nearly $655 million worldwide for a budget of $200 million, making it the lowest grossing Harry Potter film to date.
