Star Gal Gadot is set to appear in a third Wonder Woman movie soon, and while little is known about the film (basically, she’ll be playing the lead and Patty Jenkins will be directing again), she offered a vague but promising update on the development status during a new interview in support of Goodles, a new company she’s invested in that offers health-conscious mac and cheese dishes.
The third film will have a lot at stake; in addition to potentially closing out a trilogy of films featuring the character, it will have to both withstand the scrutiny of the beloved original and attempt to redeem the franchise after the much-criticized Wonder Woman 1984.
Gal Gadot – who will also play the evil queen in Disney’s Snow White – has become a cornerstone of the ever-evolving DC Cinematic Universe. While Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice both made a lot of money, they were held back by high prices and impossible expectations from Warner Bros. Wonder Woman, Shazam! and Aquaman have been cited as the only undeniable successes of the DC shared universe era.
“We are talking!” Gadot told Forbes. “We’re currently working on the script and getting the third one made, so all the wheels are working and turning and I’m super, super excited for fans to come see Wonder Woman 3 once it’s made.”
There’s a good chance Wonder Woman 3 will be a story based in the present day, where she could interact with other heroes in the DC Universe. Previous iterations featured Wonder Woman during World War I and then in 1984, establishing her as the first DC superhero in the film’s timeline, but also suggesting that the world forgets about her every time she disappears from view. First appearing on screen in Batman v Superman, Gadot’s Wonder Woman has quickly become a fan favorite and one of the few things to transcend the ever-growing barrier between passionate fans of Zack Snyder’s DC films and the filmmaker’s detractors, who often act as if everything he’s been involved in can’t possibly be worth anything.
There is no official target date for Wonder Woman 3 yet, but it seems likely that the film will be released in late 2023 or early 2024.
