Kanye West officially became a billionaire last year. Today, he’s six times that. The 43-year-old rapper turned fashion and sneaker mogul is now worth $6.6 billion, according to Bloomberg.
Kanye West is a person of totally unexpected reactions. The site TMZ reveals that the American rapper has just filed an application with the California authorities to change his name. If he is registered so far as Kanye Omari West on his papers, the 43-year-old musician wants to remove everything in favor of … “Ye”, his nickname that is also the title of one of his albums, released in 2018.
Kanye West’s desire to be renamed in this way is not new, since he had already alluded to it in a tweet, published on August 24 of the same year. However, he had not made the official move afterwards. And it is indeed under his stage name that he ran for president in 2020.
Kanye West is not the first musician to change his name during his career. We think of Prince, who had used the famous “Love Symbol” on his records during his contractual disputes with Warner Music. The producer Sean Combs was called alternately Puff Daddy, Diddy or P. Diddy throughout his career. As for the British folk singer Cat Stevens, he became Yusuf Islam, after his religious conversion.
The rapper has not yet commented on his decision, but his application has been filed in court in Los Angeles and to date no decision has been made.
