The star Steven Spielberg has managed to move the audience at the Toronto International Film Festival with “The Fabelmans”. A semi-autobiographical drama that promises to be shocking, as the magnificent trailer suggests.

Steven Spielberg dreamed of directing a musical with the superb West Side Story, Steven Spielberg will soon be back in theaters with The Fabelmans. A drama that pays homage to the power of theaters and movies, defined as “dreams you never forget” from the first seconds of the trailer.

The film The Fabelmans tells the story of Sammy, played by Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord and Gabriel LaBelle, who has always had a passion for the seventh art. Growing up, the boy directs his first short films, encouraged to follow an artistic path by his mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams). At the same time, his father, Burt (Paul Dano) advises him to consider a more severe and secure future.

Steven Spielberg’s parents’ divorce left a lasting impression on him, and the anti-Semitic slurs he had to face made him realize that he was an “outsider.” This inspired the filmmaker for The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical feature film co-written with Tony Kushner (Munich, Lincoln, West Side Story). The first images suggest a torrent of emotions and an intimate and sublime show, magnified by the performances praised at the Toronto Film Festival where the film was presented, starting with Michelle Williams.

Seth Rogen, Jeannie Berlin, Judd Hirsch, Julia Butters, Oakes Fegley and David Lynch complete the cast of the drama, which Steven Spielberg wanted to make for many years and became a reality thanks to the “fear” caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

At the Toronto Film Festival, the director said about the need to make this film, quoted by France info:

I just felt that if I was going to leave something behind, what did I really need to clear up and unpack about my mom, dad, and sisters? It wasn’t now or never, but almost.

For all that, The Fabelmans in no way marks the end of Steven Spielberg’s career, who added:

Just because I’ve decided to retire doesn’t mean this is my swan song. Don’t believe any of this!

The Fabelmans will be released in theaters on January 25, 2023.
