The nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the 91st Academy Awards have been announced live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.
The favourites and heavy hitters are all present in the category. The Banshees of Inisherin, written and directed by Martin McDonagh, stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as best friends who must deal with the aftermath of their relationship’s sudden and unexpected termination. The Fabelmans, written with Tony Kushner, is based on Spielberg’s formative years as a director as a young man, with the fictional character Sammy Fabelman serving as a stand-in for Spielberg. The directing team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schweinert (known as “The Daniels”) was nominated for their work on Everything Everywhere All at Once, the story of a Chinese American laundromat owner who must communicate with other versions of herself from other universes to prevent the end of the multiverse.
TÁR, starring Cate Blanchett as the acclaimed fictitious composer and conductor Lydia Tár, is a psychological thriller about her fall from grace and has earned nominations for both Todd Field and Best Original Screenplay. Numerous magazines, including Vanity Fair, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, and IndieWire, crowned the film the year’s best. The lineup is rounded up by Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, which is about a luxury cruise ship that sinks and leaves its passengers trapped.
For his semi-autobiographical picture Belfast, chronicled his childhood amid the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1960s, Kenneth Branagh won his first Academy Award last year. He bested Adam McKay, who directed Don’t Look Up, Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Licorice Pizza, Zach Baylin, who directed King Richard; and Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier, who directed The Worst Person in the World.
ABC will telecast the 95th Academy Awards live on March 12. The broadcast will also be available on Hulu Live TV and YouTubeTV in addition to ABC.com. Host Jimmy Kimmel is coming back for another run
