Top Gun Maverick was released in the United States on May 27, 2022, Memorial Day weekend, and immediately took the top spot at the US box office and held it for fourteen days. Since it has been in US cinemas, it has never left the Top 10 at the box office, its “worst” place being 7th on 5 August.

The longevity of the film’s success is more than remarkable for a movie that has just become even more legendary by regaining the top spot at the end of the Labor Day weekend (September 2-5). Indeed, with 7.9 million dollars of new receipts over this long weekend, Top Gun: Maverick passes Bullet Train (7.3 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (6.6 million). An excellent performance, even if Hollywood has had a relatively low summer 2022 in terms of blockbusters releases, opens the doors to Joseph Kosinski’s film in the Top 5 of the biggest successes on North American soil.

By collecting millions of dollars, Top Gun: Maverick has now accumulated $701 million in the United States and Canada, $1 million more than Black Panther. Anecdotal? Not at all, since overtaking him made the Tom Cruise blockbuster the 5th biggest success in history on North American soil. A Top 5 made up of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens with its record of $936 million in receipts, followed by Avengers: Endgame ($858 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($811 million), Avatar ($760 million), and then Top Gun: Maverick.

It is clear that while Avatar may have seemed within striking distance, it will be tough for Tom Cruise and his young pilots to surpass it. James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster will have a worldwide release on 21 September 2022, ahead of the release of Avatar 2 on 14 December. Avatar will therefore reap new revenues and should significantly increase its gap with Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently the 12th highest-grossing film in history, with $1.441 billion in revenue. With The Snow Queen 2 in the lead by a mere $9 million.
